When filmmaker David Sampliner experiences his hometown’s first snowless winter, he goes searching for the snowy winters of his childhood. Along the way he meets artists, scientists, and people whose lives depend on snow—together they reveal its hidden wonders and help him imagine its future. What begins as a personal reckoning with winter’s disappearance expands into a global portrait of adaptation and resilience.

UNDERSTORY FILMS is a production company founded by director/DP David Sampliner, director/editor Rachel Shuman, and producer Rose Felice. David’s films include the features MY OWN MAN (Netflix) and DIRTY WORK (Amazon Prime). As a documentary cinematographer, he has shot on many acclaimed films, including TO THE END, KNOCK DOWN THE HOUSE, APART, and ONE CUT ONE LIFE. Rachel directed and edited ONE OCTOBER (Full Frame), which David shot. Rachel’s editing credits include Emmy- and Peabody-nominated STORM LAKE (Full Frame), TRUE BELIEVER (Ashland Independent Film Festival), and FIVE SEASONS (DOC NYC). David and Rachel have also collaborated on the shorts LA PASTORA (Middlebury New Filmmakers’ Festival) and BROTHERS (Dok Leipzig).

HAZEL PICTURES is the production company founded by the award-winning director/producer Beth Levison. Most recently, she executive produced GRAND THEFT HAMLET (SXSW 2024 Grand Jury Prize winner for Best Documentary Film) and produced A PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORY (True/False 2024). Her 2022 producing effort, THE MARTHA MITCHELL EFFECT, premiered at Sundance, launched on Netflix, and was nominated for a 2023 Academy Award (Best Documentary Short), while STORM LAKE, which she directed alongside DP Jerry Risius and also produced (Independent Lens, 2022), was shortlisted by the IDA as one of the best films of 2021.
